The Hare And The Tortoise

A lesson in friendship

The classical story of the boastful hare being beaten by the humble tortoise in an iconic take of, “slow and steady wins the race.” This new rendition is told from the perspective of the animals involved and explains how rude arrogance can lead to feelings of shame and embarrassment.

The book is beautifully illustrated by Barbara Ellis.

Meet The Characters

The Hare

“I am the fastest creature here. Everyone I have challenged I have beaten. That must surely make me the best in the forest.”

The Hare

The Hare is bold, brash, full of self importance, doesn’t consider the feelings of others.

The Tortoise

The Tortoise is shy, quiet, wouldn’t normally say boo to a goose.

The Owl

The Owl is supportive and concerned for his friends.

The Tortoise

“Oh no, the thought that was in my head – it popped out of my mouth!.”

The Owl

“Tortoise, my friend. Why would you say such a thing?”

All my good friends including Badger and Fox drew closer, nodding in agreement.

“If you want to race me, then I challenge you,” he sneered. “Meet me here tomorrow at noon. The last one to reach the Chestnut tree is the loser.”
